Day Sixteen: Matt Wilper's 60 Power Zone Endurance 8.19.17
Yesterday, I was inspired by reading this article from the New York Times about a 105 year old cyclist who continues to improve his VO2 Max (a measure of how efficiently your body uses oxygen during exercise). The article even said he had the VO2 max of someone who was fit in their 50s and that it had improved in the last year! The key... endurance.
80% of his time on the bike was in his endurance zones. If I'm riding 7 rides a week, this means that only 2 of them should involve crazy all-out intervals and the other five should be endurance! Hard to imagine when the culture of spin is so GO-GO-MORE-MORE!
I enjoyed this ride. Matt played all songs that were requested and we had four intervals (3 ten minute intervals and 1 five minute interval) where we brought our output numbers up to a zone three. I've taken his FTP 20 minute ride test and went onto the peloton blog to find out my zones and I suggest you do too.
Don't underestimate to power of bulk rides and steady low-level efforts.
